Just as hybrid and electric vehicles (HEVs) in Mexico are increasingly positioning themselves in the consumer's preference, production is also gaining strength in the country.
Among these, Coahuila, Hidalgo, Guanajuato and the State of Mexico are the states that serve as production centers for 11 models of the Ford, General Motors (GM), Toyota and JAC brands. Stellantis will soon join these brands with its Jeep Wagoneer S model.
Ford has been producing electric vehicles in Mexico for the longest time. The U.S. company introduced one of its most emblematic models, the Ford Mustang Mach, into the new era of electrification, to make way for the Ford Mustang Mach E.
In the State of Mexico, Stellantis will start production of the first electric vehicle, the Jeep Wagoneer S, at its plant in Toluca, where it plans to begin production at the end of the year for the United States and Canada.
By 2023, GM and Toyota will start production of their respective electric and hybrid models.
GM made its commitment to start production of the Chevrolet Blazer EV and Equinox EV models from its complex in Ramos Arizpe, Coahuila, where it started up its line in October 2023. Since that date and as of the end of July 2024, it has produced 64,555 units between both models.
To start production of electric vehicles, this complex in Ramos Arizpe received an investment of 1 billion dollars. With this, it became the fifth GM North America manufacturing site to produce electric vehicles, along with Spring Hill, in Tennessee; Factory Zero, in Detroit-HamTramck, Michigan; Orion, also in Michigan; and CAMI, in Ontario, Canada.
More recently and in a hybrid electric version, Toyota opted for the production of its Tacoma model to make way for the Tacoma HEV, to expand its portfolio of hybrid models to 10. This model is produced at its plant located in Guanajuato, where, from April to July of this year, it has produced 5,767 units.
