Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) arrivals to Mexico registered a 7.2% inter-annual growth, to 31.1 billion dollars in the first semester of 2024, informed the Ministry of Economy.
Of this total, 30.288 billion dollars correspond to reinvestment of profits, 909 million dollars to new investments, and -101 million dollars to intercompany accounts.
New investments refer to FDI flows associated with initial investments made by foreign individuals or legal entities upon establishing themselves in Mexico; or the contribution to the capital stock of Mexican companies (initial or increases) by foreign investors, or the transfer of shares by Mexican investors to foreign investors.
According to FDI registered as of the second quarter of 2024, the United States remains the main investment partner in Mexico, accounting for 44% of total flows.
For this period, Germany (13%) and Japan (10%) occupy the second and third places respectively.
At the same time, 68% of FDI received as of the second quarter of 2024 was concentrated in five Mexican states, with Mexico City in the first position (46%), followed by Nuevo León (7%), Baja California (6%) and Estado de México (5%).
Finally, 54% of registered FDI is concentrated in the manufacturing sector, with the following industries standing out: transportation equipment, beverages and tobacco, chemicals, computer equipment, food, metals, and plastics, and rubber.
On the other hand, from January 1 to July 31, 2024, the Ministry of Economy identified 166 public announcements made by the private sector, with an expected investment of 48.035 billion dollars. This amount is expected to enter the country in the next two or three years.
