Guanajuato's industry ranked 5th in Mexico with ample growth expectations.

According to preliminary figures from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), in 2022, Guanajuato will be the fifth state with the highest participation in the National Gross Domestic Product, with 4.7%, that is, 1.4 billion current pesos, only behind Mexico City, the State of Mexico, Nuevo Leon, and Jalisco.

With a strong industry, the strategic sectors for Guanajuato's economy are: agroindustrial, auto parts and automotive, leather and footwear, aerospace, and information technologies. According to Inegi, the industrial sector contributes 42% of the state's economy.

Automotive

One of the most important industries in Guanajuato's economy is the automotive industry. It is present in 21 of the state's 46 municipalities and has 360 companies. The state is also one of the main producers of light automobiles, with more than 788,000 units.

Guanajuato is the only state in Mexico with the presence of six Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), five of which are light automakers: General Motors in Silao; Honda in Celaya; Mazda in Salamanca; Toyota in Apaseo el Grande; Volkswagen in Silao (dedicated to the production of engines); and a truck assembler, Hino Motors in Silao.

What models are produced?

  • General Motors, in Silao, assembles the Silverado (regular and double cab) and Sierra (regular and double cab) models.

  • Mazda, in Salamanca, produces the Mazda 2 (hatchback and sedan) and Mazda 3, and CX-3 and CX-30 light trucks.

  • Honda, in Celaya, manufactures its HR-V light truck model.

  • Toyota, in Apaseo el Grande, manufactures its Tacoma and Tacoma HEV models.

  • Volkswagen, in Silao, manufactures the EA211 and EA888 engines.

  • Hino Motors, of Grupo Toyota, in Silao, assembles the 500 Series Units.

Other automotive companies with a presence in the state include: Kirchhoff, Waldashaff, GKN Automotive, Forvia, Freudenberg, Bosh, Fujikura, Delfingen, American Axle & Manufacturing, Kromberg & Schubert, Stant, Omron Automotive Electronics, Pirelli, among others.

Aerospace

Aerospace is one of the strategic sectors whose development has been promoted in the state. In Guanajuato, the first Mexican LSA (Light sport aircraft) was designed and manufactured by Horizontec. Some aerospace companies with a presence in the state are: ATG Additive, CEI Aerospace, Astech, Grupo SSC, Optimen, Siasa Air, Speqtrum, to mention a few. According to information from the state government, Guanajuato has exported 5.8 million dollars in aeronautical products.

Leather and footwear

The leather and footwear sector is one of Guanajuato's traditional sectors. According to statistics, eight out of every 10 pairs in Mexico are produced in Guanajuato and more than 4,698 economic units are established in this state, 52% of those registered in the country.

The footwear sector, which contributes 3% of the state's GDP according to estimates, records annual exports of more than 900 million dollars, mainly to countries such as the United States, Canada, Panama, Guatemala, and Italy, among others.

Agroindustrial

Guanajuato is characterized for being a fertile land. At the national level, the primary sector generates 43,501 million pesos of the state's Gross Domestic Product (4.2% of the state's GDP). At the national level, it ranks seventh with a greater contribution to the national GDP of 5.2 percent. In agricultural production it stands out as eighth in the national ranking; in livestock, it is fifth and 25th in fisheries. Among the main products of the entity are grain corn, agave, grain sorghum, broccoli, lettuce, and alfalfa, among others. It occupies one of the first places nationally in the export of strawberries.

There are around 200 agroindustrial companies in the state, including Agrícola Santa Amalia, Mr. Lucky, Aguilares, AGRIIZAR, Agropecuaria Sanfandila, Frutymex, Goldfield, Xtra Congelados, Proselacsa, among others. In addition to research centers such as Agrobioteg and Agres, to mention a few, according to the Guanajuato Food Cluster.

Information technologies and data centers

Another strategic sector for Guanajuato is Information Technology, through which it seeks to promote digital transformation. According to figures from the GTO Tech cluster, there are more than 60 companies and 240 developers. In addition to the presence of data centers, as is the case of Layer 9, a hyperscale project with a 96MW campus whose investment is 800 million dollars.
