Mexican plastics companies bet on sustainability and new regulations

As part of Expo Plastics 2024, an outstanding panel of women leaders in the plastics industry gathered to discuss the challenges and opportunities in sustainability and compliance in Mexico.

The experts agreed that sustainability and compliance are not only legal requirements, but also an opportunity to drive innovation and competitiveness in Mexico's plastics industry. Among the key points addressed in the panel were:

- Circular economy: The need to adopt circular production and consumption models that minimize waste and maximize the reuse of plastic materials.

- Innovation in materials: The importance of developing new, more sustainable and biodegradable plastic materials, as well as technologies to recycle and valorize plastic waste.

- Transparency and traceability: The need to establish transparent and traceable systems to ensure compliance with environmental regulations and the proper management of plastic waste throughout the value chain.

- Collaboration between actors: The importance of fostering collaboration between business, government, academia and civil society to drive the transition to a circular plastic economy.

Faced with the challenge of what companies should do in terms of regulation and sustainability, the panelists recommended that companies in the plastics sector implement ambitious goals such as defining clear and measurable targets to reduce their virgin plastic consumption, increase recycling rates and minimize their carbon footprint. In addition to collaborating with suppliers and customers to work together with their business partners to promote sustainable practices throughout the supply chain

In closing, the experts on the panel concluded that sustainability and regulatory compliance are key pillars for the future of the plastics industry in Mexico, and that companies have a crucial role to play in the transition to a circular economy by investing in innovation, fostering collaboration and adopting responsible practices.
