UNACEA’s annual assembly, held May 13th at the Italian Senate, highlighted the evolving role of construction machinery in driving sustainable growth. With opening remarks from Minister Adolfo Urso and Senator Luca De Carlo, the event brought together policymakers, industry leaders, and environmental voices like Legambiente.

Italy’s construction equipment market saw a 6% boost in Q1 2025, with 4,400 units sold—driven by a rise in earth-moving (+5%) and road machines (+11%).

Minister Urso called the sector a "pillar of the economy" and urged companies to invest in cleaner technologies, especially as Italy prepares for the Ukraine reconstruction conference this July. Senator De Carlo stressed the need for a national plan on fleet renewal and emissions regulation.

UNACEA President Michele Vitulano underscored the urgency of replacing outdated machines—still 40% of the fleet—and expanding low-emission zones. Legambiente’s Giorgio Zampetti added that innovation in machinery is crucial to making the construction sector truly sustainable.

While often overlooked, construction machinery is essential for infrastructure, urban regeneration, and environmental efforts. The Italian sector spans everything from excavators to selective demolition equipment and generated over €6 billion in 2024, with 80% of output exported and 85,000 jobs supported.

Despite a 9% dip in domestic sales in 2024, the sector remains strong. UNACEA is pushing for clearer regulations to support the circular economy, as modern equipment enables more efficient, eco-friendly construction—vital to Italy’s future competitiveness and climate goals.
