Historic record is expected for the production and export of the automotive sector in Mexico

Automotive industry companies produced 1,996,136 units in Mexico, an increase of 5.2% compared to the same period in 2023, of which light trucks accounted for 75.5% of the total assembled and the remainder corresponded to the manufacture of automobiles.

The volume of production in the first half of the year was just 5,136 units below the record of the first half of 2018, when 2,1,272 automobiles left the plants established in Mexico.

Meanwhile, during the January-June 2024 period, exports of 1 million 721,852 units were reported, which represented an advance of 10.7% compared to the same period of 2023.

The production of lightweight vehicles in Mexico increased 3.8% last June to 344,206 units; while exports grew 3.3% to 295,742 units, which amounts are placed as "the best figure" since 6 and 5 years ago, respectively, reported this Tuesday the National Institute of Geography and Informatics (Inegi).

The second part of the year will mark an upward trend in the manufacture of lightweight automobiles, as well as exports to the world. It is estimated that production will hover between 3.9 and 4 million vehicles assembled by the end of the year, figures similar to those observed in 2017, when the all-time record was achieved.

Meanwhile, auto exports could be around 3.5 million units, which means a higher volume than the 3.4 million recorded in 2018.

During the first half of the year, Mexico exported 1 million 374,055 vehicles to the United States, its main trading partner, which represented an increase of 13.5% compared to January to June 2023, when 1 million 210,648 units were shipped.

Of this amount, 1,101,618 units correspond to light trucks and 272,437 automobiles, where General Motors leads exports of SUVs and pickup trucks, with 347,205 units. Followed by Ford with 191,832 units and Chrysler with 171,303 vehicles.

If foreign sales from the U.S., Canada and Germany are added together, Mexican exports account for 91.3% of total shipments.
