During the G7 Ministerial Meeting on Industry and Technological Innovation, Canada and Italy released a Statement of Intent to deepen collaboration on critical minerals and raw materials. This builds on the Italy-Canada Roadmap for Enhanced Cooperation and Canada’s 2022 Critical Minerals Strategy. Both countries are committed to strengthening energy security and sustainability through regular engagement via an Energy Dialogue. This dialogue will focus on critical minerals, sustainable energy transitions, energy storage, and research into advanced nuclear reactors and fusion.
Canada and Italy aim to enhance global supply chain resilience and sustainability for critical minerals by promoting trade, investment, and sharing best practices, policies, and ESG standards. The countries will also collaborate on research, recycling, exploration, and joint projects in critical minerals, with Canada joining the Horizon Europe program in July 2024 to further these efforts.

- Supply Chain Strengthening: Facilitating trade and co-investments in critical mineral projects.
- International Cooperation: Engaging in global platforms such as the Minerals Security Partnership and the International Energy Agency.
- Research and Innovation: Joint efforts to improve recycling and exploration through shared best practices.
The Energy Dialogue will be launched in the coming months by Minister Jonathan Wilkinson and Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. This collaboration highlights the strong partnership between Canada and Italy, which is vital for fostering technological and industrial synergies.
