Mapei, an Italian company and global leader in the production of adhesives, sealants, and chemical products for the construction industry, has been selected to play a key role in the extraordinary restoration of the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, which was severely damaged by a fire on April 15, 2019. Collaborating with Lefèvre and CCR (BALAS group), the two companies awarded the restoration tender by the Rebâtir Notre-Dame de Paris Public Authority, Mapei provided specialized solutions for restoring the cathedral's vaulted ceilings in the transept, central nave, and choir.
The reopening of Notre-Dame to the public is scheduled for December 8, 2024, in conjunction with the celebration of the Immaculate Conception, though some restoration tasks will still be ongoing.
For this monumental project, Mapei applied its expertise in structural reinforcement. Restoration of the vaulted ceilings began in the spring of 2022 after Mapei trained builders and stonemasons in the proper use of its innovative solution. The project was carried out with great care to preserve the cathedral’s integrity, involving specialists in the restoration of historic monuments.
Mapei's solution included a pre-blended, natural hydraulic lime (NHL) and Eco-Pozzolan mortar, reinforced with a glass fibre mesh. This approach, designed specifically for consolidating historic structures, was approved by the team of three architects overseeing the restoration: Philippe Villeneuve, Rémi Fromont, and Pascal Prunet, with structural advice from Italian architect Carlo Blasi. The solution underwent a year of rigorous testing, both in the lab and on-site, before receiving final approval.
“This structural work, which acts as a kind of shell, gives back the masonry vaulted ceilings their original resistance and shape,” said Thomas Briac, engineer for Lefèvre. “It alleviates the effects of future movements and prevents fractures in the joints with adjacent structures. Being able to rely on the most cutting-edge technology is of enormous help because working on something that is part of our heritage does not necessarily mean it is not of our time.”
Carlo Blasi, Works Management Consultant for the restoration, also praised Mapei’s involvement, saying, “Mapei’s extensive experience in using mortars for consolidation and restoration work was greatly appreciated. Mapei was able to demonstrate that its materials had been tested, undergone various tests, and certified for their mechanical properties and characteristics.”
Mapei’s participation in this historic restoration reflects its commitment to preserving cultural heritage through advanced technology and meticulous craftsmanship.
