Ontario Expands Skills Development Fund with Nearly $1 Billion in New Investments

Ontario is making a significant investment in its workforce with an additional $955 million over three years for the Skills Development Fund (SDF), bringing the total to $2.5 billion. The expanded funding—announced as part of the upcoming 2025 provincial budget—aims to upskill workers and safeguard jobs in the face of ongoing economic uncertainty and U.S. trade actions.

Premier Doug Ford emphasized the government's commitment to Ontario workers, citing the need for resilience amid challenges such as American tariffs. “We’re standing by our workers,” said Ford. “This expanded funding is part of our broader strategy to ensure Ontarians are equipped to thrive no matter the global conditions.”

The new investment includes $705 million in fresh funding through the SDF Training Stream, in addition to a previously announced $100 million boost in January 2025. These funds will help expand job training and re-skilling programs in sectors vulnerable to trade disruption, including manufacturing and health care.

Labour Minister David Piccini highlighted the importance of supporting skilled trades and workforce development: “Ontario’s economy is built on the talents of our workers. With this investment, we’re ensuring they have access to the training, tools, and support needed to succeed.”

The province will also allocate $150 million over the next three years to the SDF Capital Stream to meet growing demand for infrastructure and equipment upgrades tied to training initiatives.

“Our plan is about protecting Ontario’s economic future,” said Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy. “By investing in our workers, we’re strengthening the province’s resilience and ensuring long-term prosperity.”
