Ontario Shipyards and Fincantieri: Italian Expertise Supporting Canada’s Next-Generation Corvettes

Ontario Shipyards, with support from the Ontario Government and the Ontario Shipbuilding Grant Program, is preparing to bid on Canada’s next-generation naval corvettes.

According to Ontario Shipyards’ LinkedIn, the company aims to unlock untapped capacity in Ontario shipyards and restore the province as a hub of shipbuilding. Partnering with Fincantieri, Italy’s largest shipbuilder, Ontario Shipyards combines Italian naval expertise with local industrial capabilities.

The new vessels, replacing the aging Kingston-class ships, will feature enhanced range, modularity, and operational flexibility. Italian companies have clear opportunities to contribute by supplying advanced machinery, automation systems, modular components, and engineering expertise, supporting both construction and technological innovation.

This initiative aligns with Canada’s broader National Shipbuilding Strategy and the Ontario Shipbuilding Grant Program, which aim to modernize domestic shipbuilding, strengthen supply chains, and adopt advanced technologies — areas where Italian manufacturers can provide significant value.
