Italy’s woodworking technology and furniture production industry faced an 8% decline in 2024, with total production dropping to €2.4 billion. Exports fell 7.8% to €1.7 billion, while domestic demand shrank 9.5% to €730 million. Imports saw the sharpest decline, plummeting 40% to €180 million, strengthening the trade balance to €1.5 billion (-1.5% from 2023). Overall market consumption stood at €910 million, reflecting an 18% decrease.
Economic and Geopolitical Challenges
The industry’s downturn reflects global economic uncertainties, labor shortages, and geopolitical tensions. The uncertainty surrounding Italy’s Industry 5.0 policies, coupled with delayed effects from past government incentives, has further complicated market recovery.
Acimall’s director, Dario Corbetta, noted that incentives had temporarily masked structural weaknesses. He pointed to labor shortages, a slow generational workforce shift, and declining exports as key factors impacting growth.
Key Export Markets
From January to September 2024, Italy’s top destinations for woodworking technology exports were:

- France: €122M (+22%)
- Germany: €92M (-1%)
- Poland: €74M (-5%)
- Spain: €56M (+7%)
