Mexico, optimistic about the T-MEC review

The head of the Ministry of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, was optimistic about the review of the Mexico-United States-Canada Agreement (T-MEC), and predicted that the relationship between the government of President Claudia Sheinbaum and the administration of President-elect Donald Trump will be very good.

“I am optimistic, I am not saying it will be easy, because nothing is easy, but the relationship with President Trump is going to be very good and with his government as well,” said the secretary.

At the assembly of the National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores (ANTAD), Secretary Ebrard explained that his confidence is based on the fact that Mexico recently became the main trading partner of the United States and that millions of jobs in that country depend on its exports to our nation.

He highlighted the growth figures for exports from Mexico to the United States and from the United States to Mexico under the T-MEC, which he described as the best deal the North American countries have ever done together. In the last year, he pointed out, Mexican exports to the United States increased by 6.5%, while those from that country to ours grew by around 4.5%.

He also considered that the imposition of tariffs on exports from Mexico to the United States would only affect US consumers.

“The only thing that imposing tariffs on these imports will do is to put these companies in danger, to begin with the automotive industry, there are reasonable, sensible, weighty arguments to avoid this, if what we want is to compete, then let's make a plan to do so, in fact, we have already done so”, he said.
