According to the National Agricultural Council, the agricultural sector is the third largest generator of foreign exchange in Mexico, after tourism and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), above the foreign exchange generated by oil.

Mexico is the third largest agricultural producer in Latin America, the eleventh largest food producer in the world and the seventh largest exporter of agri-food products, standing out as a success story thanks to the Free Trade Agreement with the United States and Canada, but also to the country's health and safety. 

Horticulture contributes close to 40% of the total value of Mexico's agricultural production, as well as generates more than 1.4 million day laborer jobs, contributes to the surplus trade balance with an average of 196,220 million pesos annually.

Since 2016, Mexico became the main agri-food supplier of the United States, currently Mexico supplies this market with more than 70% of fresh vegetables and almost 50% of the fruits that said country imports from abroad. 

In 2023, agri-food exports reached a value of more than 51 billion dollars, the highest value in 32 years. 

In 2023, a surplus of 7.576 billion dollars more than in 2022 is expected. From January to May 2024, our surplus is $4.89 billion dollars, 35.7% more than in 2022.
