The Mexican energy sector presents a mix of traditional and renewable sources, with a gradual trend towards diversification.
Power Generation: Total electricity generation in 2021 was 323.5 TWh. CFE contributed 39.6%, Independent Power Producers (IPP) 29.2%, the private sector 31.1% and Pemex 0.7%.
Energy Consumption: The main consumers are medium-sized companies (36.2%), the residential sector (27.2%) and large industry (23.7%).
Renewable Energies: There has been significant growth in renewable energies such as wind and solar, driven by energy policy and international commitments.
Challenges and opportunities
The sector faces challenges such as growing energy demand, the transition to clean energy, and the need to ensure energy security. Government policies and private investments will be critical to address these challenges and take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Mexican energy sector.
The future of the energy sector
With the next administration, headed by Claudia Sheinbaum, continuity is expected in policies that prioritize the role of state-owned companies and energy security. However, the balance between public and private participation, as well as the consideration of international commitments, will be crucial for the sustainable development of the Mexican energy sector.
Prodensa seeks to be a key player in the development and growth of the Mexican energy sector, contributing constructively to the dialogue and cooperation between the private sector and government authorities.
